![]() ![]() Just getting 2021 GD Reflection 303RLS to be hauled by 20 Crew Cab short bed w/ OEM fifth wheel/gooseneck prep pkg (puck system). ![]() Lots of pros and cons to any style of hitch. The two halves of this hitch are considerably lighter than a similar auto slider hitch. Hitching in this position leaves lots of room between the truck and 5th wheel for opening/closing the tailgate or the front storage compartment of the trailer. I can connect the hitch from any direction and in the aft position, the hitch is easily visible out the back window of the truck. There is a lot to be said for the KISS principle in hitches. The exceptions to this are the Andersen ball and socket (but at least this connection is high enough to see) or the auto slider hitch that needs more careful alignment when connecting because of the wedge that turns the hitch to move it back and forth. A traditional 5th wheel hitch slides together with more tolerance for being out of alignment. You have to position the hitch ball directly under the coupler and you can't see this from the driver's seat. If you move it back to provide additional clearance to the cab while turning, the "wings" of the pin box will be at risk of impacting the side rails of the box in a turn.Ĭonnecting to a ball in the bed of the truck is more complicated than connecting with most 5th wheel hitches. The position of the trailer pin within the truck box has to comprehend several things. ![]() check carefully as to whether this will affect your warranty. I see several product names that Grand Design and LCI will not be comfortable with. You have found a rather complex set of parts to connect your 5th wheel to your truck. As well since I don't have the factory puck/goose neck in mine I will likely go B&W gooseneck hitch with the 4" offset ball. GOOSENECK PINBOX SHORTBED FREEI have heard some good things about the Andersen as well but if we decide to go 5th wheel in the future I will very likely go Reese Goosebox so no lifting at all and have the bed free and clear when not towing. It is the only gooseneck type of hitch that I am aware is approved by Lippert not to void the warranty. It seems like such an elegant and simple solution that there must be tradeoffs that I don't seeYou may want to look at the Reese Goosebox. I told the GD dealer that I would like a clean bed when not RVing and since the sliding hitches are too heavy to remove what are my options? They recommended a Curt Goose neck hitch ball, Curt safety chain loops for Ram underbid trailer hitch, Andersen safety chains for Ranch hitch 5th wheel to gooseneck coupler attachment, and the Andersen 3139 Ranch Hitch Adapter w/ 8" offset. Haven't towed before so I'm looking for opinions on the hitch setup. Very pleased with the B&W.Just getting 2021 GD Reflection 303RLS to be hauled by 20 Crew Cab short bed w/ OEM fifth wheel/gooseneck prep pkg (puck system). We bought a new Columbus in July, dealer said that the only gooseneck adapter they would warranty was the Reese. I just did the same and ended up with the B&W. It fits right into my B&W Turnover ball hitch and is the quickest and easiest that I found to remove from the bed of the truck. I was sold on going with the Goose Box, but after looking into it I discovered that it won't adapt to my toyhauler's base. Lippert is the manufacturer of the pinboxes found on most RV's and although Reese makes 3 different models of the Goose Box to adapt to these, your particular RV's pinbox bracket may not allow the fitment of the Goose Box. However, there are only 2 or 3 pinbox models that the Goose Box will work with. The Goose Box deals with this quite well I believe. Yes, there are plenty of guys out there running other gooseneck adapters and doing ok with it, but there is definitely the possibility of putting too much stress on the RV. Having said that, I have done extensive research lately on fifth wheel to goose neck adapters, and the only one that I would recommend is the Reese Goose Box. I have a 6.5 foot bed and that's close enough. I believe that you will constantly be worried about it. You may be able to get by with the short bed, but I personally wouldn't chance it. ![]()
